IXgen for FrameMaker 7 and 8
This page describes the new features in IXgen 7 and provides
pricing information.

New Features in IXgen 7
In addition to all the regular IXgen features many users are
familiar with, IXgen 7 offers these new features:
- Create Subentries — IXgen searches for leading words common to two or more
entries, or single entries sharing common words with an existing multi-level entry
block. When found, IXgen forms a common first-level entry, then places the unique trailing
words of each original entry in second-level entries under the new root entry.
Example:
dogs, breeds
dogs, dietary needs
dogs:pets
dogs, training
becomes:
dogs
breeds
dietary needs
pets
training
- Elevate Unique Subentries — IXgen searches for two-level entries with
root entries that appear only once and that have a
single subentry. The words of the subentry are then moved up into the main entry.
Examples:
Cats
domestic
Lions
African
becomes:
Cats, domestic
Lions, African
You can set the separator character or string used to append the second level to the
first level. The default is ", " (comma-space), but an alternate would be just a space
character.
Flip Entries — exchange first and second levels of an entry. Optionally, keep
the original and make a flipped copy. You can even keep the original and make a flip with
a reference back to the original form of the entry.
Example:
cats:domestic
dogs:breeds
(or)
cats
domestic
dogs
breeds
becomes:
breeds:dogs
domestic:cats
(or)
breeds
dogs
domestic
cats
You can also copy and flip, which means that a pre-flip copy of the entry is made.
You'll have a flipped entry and an original entry. You can also flip a copy and
make a referral:
Example (set for copy and referral flip):
cats:domestic
(or)
cats
domestic
becomes:
cats:domestic
domestic, see also cats
(or)
domestic, see also cats
You can program the reference phrase you prefer to use, such as "see", "see also", or
a custom phrase.
Validate References — If you use "see also", "see", or similar references,
IXgen can check that the referenced entry actually exists.
Display Character Formatting in the Editable Marker List — while working in
the Editable Marker List, you'll be able to see and apply character formatting as display
text rather than as embedded character format commands. You'll be able to much more
readily see your index character formatting.
You can also use exaggerated display
formatting in the editable marker list to make your index entry formatting tasks easier.
The format properties for a given character tag in the editable marker list are separate
from the format properties in the IX document (your production document).
Floating Toolbar — all of the IXgen commands associated with the
editable marker list are now available on a floating toolbar. This saves a lot
of trips to the main IXgen pull-down menu while you're working in the editable
marker list. Great new feature. We should have done this sooner.
Special Requests for IXgen 7
We've made these small but handy adjustments in IXgen operation:
- Unsorted Editable Marker List Option — If you wish, you can now have
the Editable Marker list presented unsorted. This is likely to be in the page order
of the markers, but not always.
- Display Full source file path in the Editable Marker List —
the Editable Marker list can now optionally show the full path to the source file.
- Start Markers from Keywords action from the current Insert Point —
Markers from Keywords can now be set to start from the beginning of the paragraph which
holds the insert point. This is easier than highlighting from the insert point out
to the end of the document. This new feature is quite useful if you find yourself
stopping and restarting the Markers from Keywords process.
- Relocation of IXgen files — IXgen files have been relocated to
a central IXgen location within your FrameMaker installation.
- Forgiveness of font errors in IXgen templates — if you receive a
font-warning error when starting an IXgen function, you can now click through and
ignore the error. However, we still recommend updating the IXgen templates to reflect
the font configuration of your system so that you avoid seeing this dialog box.
- Copy and Paste System Key — You can now copy the IXgen
license key (the ixgenkey.999 contents)
directly from the IXgen license dialog box. You no longer need to send the
file contents by way of attachment. Simply copy and paste the key from the IXgen
license dialog box into your mail program.
- Revised IXgen User's Guide — over the years, many pages were added
at the "last minute" to this document. Things got out of hand. We've done
some reorganization and a lot of clean-up work. Apologies to all our technical writer
friends who probably cringed more than once using the old version.
New IXgen 7 Pricing
The new single-license price for IXgen 7 is $249.00. However, the incremental
pricing of additional
licenses remains unchanged.
IXgen 7 Upgrade Pricing
As we've done in the past, IXgen 7 upgrade pricing is based in large part on a multi-tiered
pricing structure. This protects recent purchasers of IXgen from "paying again" for
their upgraded licenses.
For example, if you just purchased IXgen 5.5, you won't be hit
again for the full price when you upgrade to IXgen 7.0. How much the IXgen 7.0 upgrade
costs depends on how long ago you originally purchased IXgen.
The IXgen 7 upgrade price has two components:
- One-time Initial License upgrade fee of $50. This is only for your first
IXgen license, and covers implementation of the new features noted above. Additional
IXgen licenses that you own are not subject to this fee. You pay the $50 one time,
whether you're upgrading one IXgen license or a 1,000.
- Time-based upgrade pricing for each IXgen license you own. This is an incremental
upgrade amount paid for each license you own. The more recently you
purchased IXgen, the lower the upgrade fee for each license. Upgrade pricing is
a percentage of the IXgen 5.5 price for the same number of licenses.
This next table shows how these elements work together:
| Purchased IXgen how long ago? |
90 days or less |
91 days to 180 days |
181 days to 365 days |
365 days or longer |
| IXgen 7 Upgrade Charge |
$50 only, one time |
$50 once + 20% |
$50 once + 40% |
$50 once + 60% |
Example 1: Single IXgen 5.5 license purchased 45 days ago:
$50 (that's it!)
Example 2: Single IXgen 5.5 license purchased 210 days ago:
$50 + (40% of 199) = $129.60
Example 3: Six IXgen 5.5 licenses purchased 120 days ago:
$50 + (20% of 199 + 149 + 149 + 149 + 99 + 99) = $218.80
Still not sure what your upgrade cost would be? We'll be happy to look up your last IXgen
order and provide an upgrade quotation, either verbally or via email.
Not sure whether to buy IXgen 7 now because you haven't decided when you might
upgrade to FrameMaker 7 or 8? We have two options for you:
- Buy IXgen 7 now, but install and license IXgen 5.5 for FrameMaker 5.5-6.0. You're
then entitled to IXgen 7 at no charge, no matter when you might install IXgen 7.
- Buy and install IXgen 5.5 now. If you upgrade to IXgen 7 within 90 days, you only
pay the one-time $50 fee, regardless of how many licenses you are upgrading. If more
than 90 days have gone by, you'll fall into the tiered pricing given above.
Buying IXgen 7 now gives you ultimate price protection and flexibility.
(Note that your IXgen purchase history is determined from when your IXgen order was entered
into our order system, not when you paid the order or when you started using IXgen.)
