Installing IXgen (Demo or Production)

1. Download the appropriate IXgen User's Guide. Place the IXgen User's Guide somewhere permanent on your system, perhaps where you store other documentation files. (The guide also has additional installation details if needed.)

2. Download the IXgen distribution for your platform and FrameMaker version. Save the download in a new, empty, scratch folder.

3. Double-click the distribution file. This is a self-extracting ZIP file.

4. Answer "Y" when prompted to run setup.exe, the IXgen installer. setup.exe will lead you through the remaining installation steps. (Or, you can answer "N" and run setup.exe at a later time. But at some point you must run setup.exe to install IXgen, or install IXgen by hand as described in Appendix A of the IXgen User's Guide, downloadable from this page.)

5. Stop and restart FrameMaker. IXgen should appear on the main menu bar. Go to the IXgen>License dialog box and send us the requested licensing information. (Detailed password information follows below.)

   When installing IXgen under UNIX, read Installing IXgen for SunOS/Solaris in the IXgen User's Guide.

6. Obtain your password by emailing us your name, company name, email address, regular address, and telephone. (Don't worry — this information is not shared with others, nor do we pepper you with email or phone calls.)

   Also please let us know whether you're a contactor or a regular employee. If a contractor, let us know the anticipated end-date of your contract.

   We will return a password to you. Typically this happens within one to four business hours. If you don't hear from us within one business day or need your password in a hurry, feel free to call us.

7. As a final installation step, make sure your File>Preferences>General "Remember Missing Font Names" option is not checked, then open and save the IXgen template files directly from the FrameMaker File>open and File>save menu. This step should correct any font issues with the IXgen templates and your system configuration.

   In IXgen 5.5, the template files are the *.fm files located in:
   <FrameMaker_Install_Folder>\templates\special

   In IXgen 7.0, the template files are located in:
   <FrameMaker_Install_Folder>\ixgen\templates

   As a final check, reopen one of the template files. If you see a font advisory of any kind please see Changing the Fonts Use by IXgen in the IXgen User's Guide. (Restore "Remember Missing Font Names" if you wish.)

A full re-installation is not required, and your current password will continue to work.

1. Download the appropriate IXgen distribution from the table of IXgen downloads below.
   These are the most current versions. Save the downloaded distribution file in a new, empty, scratch folder.
2. Double-click on the downloaded file to extract the files. Do not run (do not double-click) setup.exe!
3. Next, copy the files noted here to the locations indicated and make the edit noted. If you are using Windows Explorer to move these files, you may need to "show all file types" so that you can see the .exe and .dll files

   For IXgen 7

   For IXgen 5.5

   Copy ixgen.dll to <FM_install>\ixgen\bin, overwriting the current file. Copy editable_list_ops.exe to <FM_install>\ixgen\bin, overwriting the current file. Edit <FM_install>\ixgen\ixgen.ini with a plain-text editor (such as notepad). Select and copy (control-C) this line from your browser screen and paste it (control-V) at the bottom of the ixgen.ini file on a new line by itself: MinCharsInTextSelection=2 (For detailed information about this parameter refer to the readme.txt file or the standard ixgen.ini file, both located in the scratch folder where you unzipped this distribution.)

   Copy ixgen.dll to <FM_install>\fminit, overwriting the current file. (No other copy or edit actions are required for IXgen 5.5.)

4. Restart FrameMaker. Your upgrade installation should be complete; your current password should continue to work. (You can delete the scratch folder if you wish.)

You can, however, use IXgen 7 with FrameMaker 5.5 and 6.0.

Use this version only if you are running FrameMaker 7 or 8 under any 32-bit Windows. Don't forget to download IXGEN7DOC.PDF (first item in this table). Place the IX72WN32.EXE file in a temporary scratch folder. (Do NOT place the file in your main FrameMaker folder.) Double-click on IX72WN32.EXE, or run IX72WN32.EXE using the Windows RUN command, or type ix72WN32.EXE from a DOS window. This starts the self extraction of the distribution. You can then elect to run setup.exe to install IXgen, or come back and run setup.exe at a later time.
IXgen 7 for FrameMaker 5.5.x-6.0, all 32-bit Windows	IX72FM55.EXE - 1687 KBytes - IXgen 7 distribution for FrameMaker 5.5.x-6.0, self-extracting zip file. Same as IXgen 7 for FrameMaker 7 or 8, but works with the older 5.5.x and 6.0 versions of FrameMaker. The same download, installation, and licensing instructions given immediately above for IXgen 7 for FrameMaker 7 or 8 apply to this version.

Don't forget IXGENDOC.PDF . Includes the demo file for IXgen 5.5, demoixgn.pdf. NOTE: The FrameMaker demonstration files referenced in IXgen 5.5 demoixgn.pdf will not match those described in the FrameMaker 6.0 demo file library. Try using your own sample files and perform similar operations. (We encourage the use of your own sample files. You often see IXgen benefits more readily when the results are applied to your own test files.) Place IX55WN32 in a temporary scratch folder. (Do NOT place the file in your main FrameMaker folder.) IXgen for FrameMaker 5.0/5.1, Windows 95, NT, 3.1	These versions are no longer available.
UNIX Download Notes	Due to idiosyncrasies with web browsers, only file names with certain extensions enter automatic FTP mode when you click on them. Because of this odd behavior (which varies from browser to browser) all Sun and Solaris files use the ".exe" extension. PLEASE NOTE THE FILE NAME TO USE WHEN YOU SELECT A SAVE FILE. Or, make a note of these names so that you can rename them once the download operation is complete. Also, UNIX file names conform to DOS "eight-dot-three" name length limits. Files can thus be freely transferred through older non-UNIX systems, if required. Review the README file that comes with your distribution.
IXgen 5.5 for FrameMaker 5.5/6.0 or 5.0/5.1 Solaris	README.EXE - 8 Kbytes - General information text file. IXgen for FrameMaker 7 or 8 SunOS/Solaris	No version of IXgen 7 for FrameMaker 7 or 8 running under UNIX is planned at this time.

IXgen Licensing and Passwords

PASSWORDS FOR UNIX USERS: When deciding which machine to use for the IXgen demo, we recommend installing IXgen on the same machine that serves FrameMaker. Alternately, install IXgen on the machine of the person who will be trying IXgen. Log on to machine selected and type hostname from a shell or command tool window. Email (franks@fsatools.com) the hostname. We will return a demonstration password to you.

These are fully-functional production distributions. If you decide to purchase IXgen all you'll need is a regular password from us. There is no need to install another version.

The primary purpose of the IXgen demo is to show you that a much better tool set exists for working with markers, and that this tool set works well.

To that end, most FrameMaker users can see IXgen's benefits in a few moments. (We provide a seven day demo period so that busy people have a better opportunity to get to those few minutes with IXgen.) IXgen, as a tool, has a small set of clearly understandable and powerful features. Testing IXgen is not like testing something many more times complex, such as FrameMaker itself, and thus the demo period has been adjusted accordingly.
